2014 Model Tampa International Auto Show photographic recap!

(New 'Firebird' on display at 2014 Model Show in Tampa)

Today was a true blue All The Rods sort of day. The 2014 Model Auto Show was everything I thought it would be and so much more! Saw a lot of really great vehicles and got tons of test drives with them. I shot some video as well as just finished up a new podcast highlighting this show as well as Bug Jam a few weeks back.

My test drives included these models & my thoughts on each-

2014 Chevy Impala-The Bowtie finally got their head straight and gave the consumer a truly gorgeous new Chevy that drives well. Striking car, very comfortable ride.

2014 Chevy Malibu-The one I rode in had front bucket seats which scored points with me. A very smooth driver, got a bit of get up and go under the hood.

2014 Chevy Volt-Don't buy the BS about hybrids and electric cars having no pickup. No, it is really not like driving a golf cart, unless you're thinking about how quiet it is, then sure. But easily my favorite among the Bow Tie offerings today. Great ride, quick pickup without the ramp up you get with gas-powered cars.

2014 GMC Sierra-nice big truck, sort of a rough ride though, I think that the tires had a lot to do with it. Great truck though, despite the shaky driving.

2014 Chevy Silverado-gorgeous truck with a sunroof. I don't see too many trucks with sunroofs, This truck had all the bells and whistles. Drove well with nice get up and go.

(Line was too long for the 2014 Camaro Convertible, so I nixed that one. I've driven them before anyway.)

2014 Dodge Charger/SRT-kickass car! I'm very partial to these to begin with. Great pickup and speed with smooth driving. Getting in and sitting in the driver's seat was like meeting with an old friend, as I'd once rented a Charger not too long ago.

(Not a big fan of orange but I do love this car)

2014 Dodge Dart-drives well, cute, compact. Much better than the Dart of old. I call this the Charger's little brother.

2014 Fiat 500-I was disappointed with this one. Yes, they're cute, yes, they're unique but I didn't like the way it drove. The lady who rode with me said that the Fiats sold here are still true to the European style and feel.

2014 Ram-the Ram already has my heart as it's my favorite truck. Friends have this truck but older models. I loved driving this sexy bad boy that had a lot of pickup.

Inside the ballrooms within the convention center, there was an array of both American makes and models as well as others (German, Asian.) I was disappointed that Porsche wasn't one of them; I really wanted to check out the Panamera. The Chevy Stingray was a big hit!

(2014 Corvette Stingray)

(Eye See You)

(Impressive back end, which means it looks as good coming as it does going)

(Yes, that does say Mustang pool table
(SMH. No! What a waste of a great car!)

(Dodge Viper)
(Hyundai Veloster Turbo)

(2014 Jaguar F-Type Coupe)

(Jag F-Type Front)
(Mercedes SLS-AMG)

I also managed to get a few shots of an entirely different sort of vehicle, such as this big boy parked down the road from the convention center....

(Carnival Cruise Lines)

(Same ship)

(I don't get to see something like this that often)

All in all, a great day! There's another show just like this that's going to take place in Orlando next weekend. Just Google 'Motor Trend' and look up their show schedules, to find out more info about the Orlando show as well as one near you.

I will most definitely be back again next year in Tampa. Hopefully, the Stingray will be available for a test drive.

Bug Jam...in a word? Awesome!

Bug Jam was everything I'd thought it would be and so much more. This was an event that I'd been aware of for a good many years but for some reason never got to attend. This year I decided to head up to Bug Jam and was glad I did!

If you love cars or just love the VW, there is plenty to see and do here. The overall vibe is one of laidback happy people who clearly have a passion for their cars. Everyone present was smiling and having a good time.

There were plenty of VW-specific car clubs there such as Air-Cooled Enthusiasts as well as Miami V-Dubs and a whole lot more. These folks all parked together and displayed their unique VWs. Most of the members had customized their cars either via paint jobs or other effects.

Below are a few examples of the customized VWs I saw.

(plaid-themed VW)

(Chopped VW with lowered roof)

(Custom painted VW Bus)

(Eyelashes)

Yellow seemed to be the predominant color of the day but there were several others in varying shades of the rainbow. Below are some of the cooler colors I saw on Sunday.

(This car had a Breast Cancer awareness plate on the back)

(The Running of the Green)

(Wire-Wrapping plus high-intensity green paintjob)

(It's Super Van!)

All of the vehicles I saw had a lot of personality to them. The ones with the 'eyelid' headlights almost seemed to be a living being. There is just something about these vintage VWs that seems to bring out that effect on people.

Of course I'd be remiss if I didn't mention one of the most famous VWs for being almost human...

(There were other Herbies as well but this one was set up to have his wipers go on and off as well as to have his doors open and close. He also beeped while music from the 60's played in the background, all while being computer-controlled.)

To find out more about this particular Herbie, please visit this website, stephensherbie.com. Herbie is a 1965 Type 1 VW Sedan. To everyone else, he's several shades of awesome!

Below are several unique Buses and Vans.

(This one reminds me of tie-dye)

(There were shiny vans and then there were some who sported a rugged, weathered look)

(Great use of color and set-up)
(It's the VW Bus Army
(It's the VW Bus Army)
(Green bus)

(The ladder up the front looks pretty cool)

(What a great looking bus!)

(And yet more)

Aside from great looking vehicles, there were also vendors selling parts; old VW owner's manuals; mufflers; pipes; rims and tires. I saw plenty of people pulling Radio Flyer wagons filled to overflowing with VW parts as well as men with armloads of mufflers and pipes. Bug Jam seemed to be a great place to pick up spare parts without breaking the bank. I'm sure all the people selling this stuff made a killing on Sunday.

There were also people selling VW art, t-shirts and other things. I picked up a couple of great shirts and a VW necklace as well. I was present the moment the event opened and by noon, I was done. As I rolled out of the parking lot, the line of cars to get in was miles long. I was blown away over how many people were still showing up midday.

The parking lot sported a lot of great VWs that really should have been part of the show, like these two beauties in the photo below...

(The blue one had a chopped windshield on it. Too bad I didn't get to see the roof as well.)

(This Herbie was a few rows up from where I was parked)

I was able to get quite a lot of video shot on Sunday as well and for once the video from my phone could be salvaged.

I am definitely going to this again next year, in fact I plan on a yearly appearance.

Two words for this coming Sunday...Bug Jam!

The call of all things vintage VeeDub is calling me to Bug Jam! This will mark the first year I've attended this event and I've been looking forward to it for months.

I may not have a VW of any type but that doesn't stop me from loving them, especially the older ones. Every time I see an old Bug, Beetle or Bus while out in traffic, I can't help but smile. I think that Walt Disney Productions was onto something when they created the 'Herbie the Love Bug' franchise. I'm sure you wouldn't be surprised to know that I have the boxed set of Herbies. (The only ones I don't own are 'Herbie Goes Bananas' and 'Herbie-Fully Loaded'.) Aside from my adoration of the 'Cars' movies franchise, the Herbie series comes close to #1 on my list.

There's just something that happens to me whenever I see an old VW on the road. Even if I'm in the worst mood in the world, just seeing one of those cars just takes the awfulness away and I feel uplifted. When I am lucky enough to see one out and about, I always ponder the age of it and am amazed at how something so old is still running and is road ready. I always get such a good feeling whenever I see one.

I attended the St. Pete Beach VW BASH this past Labor Day and aside from all the hot VW action, I was amazed at how friendly most of the owners were that I chatted with. These folks were only too happy to talk about their cars. The vibe I got from some of the folks at this event was one of a mellow, peaceful easy feeling. The VW owners come from all walks of life, like any other car club out there. I also noticed quite a lot of families within the VW community. As I like to say 'Gotta start 'em young!'

So knowing how cool the VW folks were at this last event, I cannot wait to chat with more this coming Sunday. I'm really looking forward to this event. Since it's going to be held at a fairground, you can only imagine the acres and acres of the fine beauties to check out.

Even just posting this photo from the past Beach BASH, I am smiling.
